The team is made of EPFL students coming from many different sections. Mechanical, electrical, microtechnic engineering, as well as materials and computer sciences. Everybody finds what they are looking for, and bring a varied skillset to the team.

A part of the team is here permanently. It is mainly composed of the committee members. They are here to ensure the continuity of the association, as well as keep the knowledge about the boat. This allows the team to be more efficient, as the new members can be coached and taught how the boats work, instead of having to figure it out for themselves.

Being an EPFL discovery learning program means we offer projects for third year and master students. While taking part in a project, these students earn academic credit for the work done on the boat, and are fully part of the team. This makes it easier to spend time on the project, and comes with the supervision of a professor or a lab. These students have no obligation to stay in the team once their project is done, but most enjoy it a lot do, at least until the contest in summer.

Team Finances

Being a student team developping high tech composite boats means facing financial challenges. We are very lucky to be able to count on EPFL as our main donator, as well as other local companies that believe in what we are doing.

We are however on a contant lookout for additional ressources in order to developp our project even further. Read on to learn more about our boats and the contest, and click the following button to see our sponsoring proposals.

The Lightweight Boat.

Our lightweight boat is the incarnation of passion and perseverance. Since the beginning of the Hydrocontest, the team has endeavoured to developp a daring concept: the in-line bifoiler. This design is one of the most efficient foiling systems due to the very low drag generated, but comes with major stability issues. For the 2016 campaign, the decided to go back to the drawing board, as the old boat was not satisfying, and developpement on this platform was limited. The result was a longer, sleeker and lighter hull, giving improved stability both in flight and in the water. And it worked !

Comparing with a foiling catamaran, the bifoiler has only half the foils. This means less drag, as well as increased manoeuvring capabilities. Features that will make il quicker around the course.

[/et_pb_slide][et_pb_slide heading=”Not statically stable” button_link=”#” background_position=”default” background_size=”default” background_color=”#ffffff” image=”http://hydrocontest.epfl.ch/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/16-07-17-18-50-25-photoshoot-bateau.jpg” alignment=”center” background_layout=”light” allow_player_pause=”off” text_border_radius=”3″ disabled=”off”]

The main downside of this concept is that it is not statically stable. Like a bicycle, it needs constant adjustments. Without a human being on board, this has to be completely informatic

[/et_pb_slide][et_pb_slide heading=”Integrated electronics” button_link=”#” background_position=”default” background_size=”default” background_color=”#ffffff” image=”http://hydrocontest.epfl.ch/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/image_largeprvw-57.jpeg” alignment=”center” background_layout=”light” allow_player_pause=”off” text_border_radius=”3″ disabled=”off”]

Dynamic stability is achieved via a custom code. This means we have an on-board computer and a system of sensor constantly studying the movement of the boat and adjusting it to optimise stability, and hence speed.

The boat is made of high tech NTPT carbon fibre. The skin is only 0.6mm thin, ensuring the lightest hull possible. B-comb linen power-ribs have been used for an added 200% rigidity. It is the first time these two swiss technologies were used together.

The Heavyweight Boat.

Our heavyweight boat is the contest’s veteran. But hey, who changes a team that wins? Of course, we keep doing all we can to improve it. New rudder, keel fin, and deck arrangements were some on the things on last year’s to do list. The SWASH concept in itself is not new, however the implementation for mass transport has not been fully studied. The idea is to carry the load under the water, where it will not make waves and hence generate less drag. This means the torpedo dimensioning has to be optimised: the right length and volume to have adequate buoyancy, and the right depth, enough so that it does not generate surface effects but not too much to maximise the operating areas of the boat. One of the challenges, now that the concept is proven to be working, is to implement a draught reduction system as well a loading mechanism, to make this type of ships viable in full scale (harbour access, container management etc..)

Our heavy boat follows the SWASH (small waterplane area single hull) concept. Drag is composed by both skin friction and wave making. Our SWASH carries most of its load underwater deep enough not to make waves. This allows us to have a much thinner hull.

[/et_pb_slide][et_pb_slide heading=”Pendulum” button_link=”#” background_position=”default” background_size=”default” background_color=”#ffffff” alignment=”center” background_layout=”light” allow_player_pause=”off” text_border_radius=”3″ disabled=”off”]

As the weight is carried in the torpeedo, the center of gravity of the boat is underneath the waterline. This makes it extremely stable, as it acts as a pendulum.

The keel fin has a lenticular profile, which stalls when turning, hence drastically increasing maneuverability.

What is the HydroContest?

The HydroContest is the main event of the Hydros foundation. It’s aim is to promote energy efficiency in maritime transportation. The contest takes place every year in Vidy, on lake Geneva. Universities from all over the world come to take part, giving the contest a truly multinational and multicultural dimension. More than just a competition, it is a reunion allowing student to exchange and discuss ideas and concepts.
